Radio Ops Training

The Matrix, Mickey Spillane (Film Noir), and a Game Show are just a sampling of themes that VarnerMiller used to create an interactive training DVD for the U.S. Border Patrol Academy. The objective of the project was to create video training for use in a computer lab where trainees were able to participate in depicted scenarios using actual radios to learn and apply the service radio 10-codes. However, rather than just producing mundane video that reenacted field events, we took their objectives and created a video that went beyond the expectations of the Border Patrol Academy. VarnerMiller developed a new strategy of training that uses themes, a guide, and a defined story baseline that carries the trainee through a day in the life of a Border Patrol Agent in a six module training solution. Our in-house team used video, 3D animation, and various other multimedia elements to create an interactive video that is not only informative, but also entertaining and engaging.

Regardless of how captivating the design and storyline might be, however, unless the trainees can easily pick up the goals and objectives of the course the video would be worthless. The ability of VarnerMiller to create training that is equally enjoyable as it is education is the distinguishing element that makes this training solution stand out from all of the rest. Through a needs analysis that determines the customers' real expectations, goals and objectives of the project, our in-house education specialists worked side by side with the design and production crew to guarantee that our storyline never overshadows the educational instruction.

As a result of the Radio Operations Training, trainees are able to demonstrate their proficiency with service radio 10-codes and the ability to recognize activities that require communications with supervisory personnel. In addition, trainees have asked for additional training time and wish other training were developed in this manner. This training has been in placed for a number of Academy sessions, and continues to provide excellent training and positive feedback.
