Night Practical Exercise Training
After learning all the necessary information about becoming a Border Patrol agent inside the classroom, trainees are given a chance to use the skills they learned and apply them in a controlled setting using contracted role-players "acting" in various roles and scenarios. The success of these activities, known as Night Practical Exercises (NPE), rely on the evaluators' (Academy instructors) ability to know the goals and objectives of the scenarios as well as how to critique the trainees, also for the contract role-players to know how their roles should be portrayed, and for the trainees to know how to conduct themselves during the NPE. It became the responsibility of VarnerMiller to create an interactive training program consisting of three modules, one for each main target audience, with eight scenarios each to ensure that every group was prepared for the NPE.
The in-house instructional design and video production team worked together to bring the previous instructor-led training up to date with new requirements and directives, and develop an interactive training program that was both informative and entertaining in a format to deploy it over the web. After creating a script and detailed storyboard of eight scenarios of typical experiences a Border Patrol agent might encounter, the video team left for a 16-day video shoot in the New Mexico desert. Through the editing of the film, our team took the footage we shot during the day and converted it to night to simulate full-moon conditions and appearances. Throughout the scenarios, a Border Patrol Instructor provides instruction for carrying out the NPE operations. The instructor was filmed in front of a blue chromo-key screen and inserted into the scenes during the pertinent parts of the scenarios. The result is an incredible training environment where the field exercises are displayed, an instructor introduces information on the screen at the appropriate location in the video, and all the necessary training and job aids are easily accessible within the online tool. Through this program instructors, role-players, and trainees can login to their relevant module from any computer on the intranet to gain the information, and the Border Patrol Academy can forgo the cost and time associated with preparing each group for the NPE.
